the 140th anniversary of Waterbedrijf Groningen

Waterbedrijf Groningen (Groningen Water Company) was founded in 1879 by two Frisian doctors: Simon Eduard Oudschans Dentz and Markus Jan Baart de la Faille. At that time, it had become clear that polluted drinking water from wells, canals or water wagons was the main cause of diseases, such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea and dysentery. Nowadays, this turbulent history is a distant memory. Nowadays, Waterbedrijf Groningen is a social enterprise responsible for the sustainable water management in the region. Corporate social responsibility, sustainability and collaboration are the company’s main objectives.

We came up with the name ‘Goud Water’ (Gold Water). It refers to the blond colour of the beer. In Gronings, the local dialect of Groningen, ‘Goud’ also means good. This refers to the high quality of the water and, evidently, the quality of the beer. Moreover, the name is a reference to the healing powers assigned to beer back then. On the packaging and labels, the names of the company’s founders are represented: Dentz De La Faille.

The colours, and the use of lines and circles in gold foil refer to design elements and colour-use of advertising and labels from the time the company was founded: the late 19th century
